Description: Large and impressive pair of pottery, standing guardian figures, both having very expressive facial expressions, one with a grimace, bearing his teeth, the other with a mustache. Both wearing knee length tunics with chest straps and upturned pointed helmets, each holds a separately cast plume in his raised arm. One tunic has lion head tunic sleeve cuffs. Retaining some of the elaborate polychrome painted decoration. Standing on integral kidney shape bases. Scattered areas of mineral deposits and encrustation on their surfaces. Each is repaired from approximately twelve original pieces with restoration over the breaklines, a few stable cracks. Very impressive examples. Custom cutout swivel bases.
Provenance: Collection of Mary K. F. Leong, WA., 1980-1990. TL certificates from both Oxford Authentication Ltd. & CIRAM lab. , testing between 1000 and 1600 years old.
