Description: Carved gray volcanic stone hacha depicting a stylized human deity head, having an open mouth with an integral carved large nose ring extending over the top of his mouth, broad nose and lidded eyes. Wearing fancy double tasseled ear ornaments and a complicated “woven” angular hairdo. Some remaining red-orange surface pigment. A restored chip above his right eye. Some surface erosion on the left side of hairdo and area surrounding his left eye. A long diagonal dig on the right side of hairdo, otherwise intact. A beautifully carved example.
Provenance: Ex. Meza Family collection, Whittier, CA., acquired 1960s. Ex. Fernendez Family Collection: by descent from his grandfather, Dr. R. Fernandez MD., a Spanish citizen, who was a gastroenterologist. His wife was also an M.D., 1940s.
