Description: Pottery pubic cover having a cream slip ground and red-orange intricate abstract geometric decoration. Worn by the female natives of the Island of Marajo at the mouth of the Amazon. This triangular form was originally suspended by fiber tie cords sewn through the three corner holes and worn on ceremonial occasions. The clay is formed and slip-painted prior to firing. The finely painted dense images on the face of the cover are regionally specific to areas of the island. These likely would have been the sole coverings, outside of elaborate body painting, that a woman of the Marajo culture would have owned. Repaired from approximately five original pieces with restoration over the break lines. Custom metal base. A beautiful example.
Provenance: Ex. Jean-Eugene Lions collection, Geneva, Switzerland, active 1950s-1980.
Shipping Fee:
National: $25.00
International: $75.00 (This is approximate and for Postal Service. Prices may vary, especially for private carriers such as: FEDEX, UPS and BAX).
