Description: Large Johannes painted style decorated pottery vessel having a bulbous body, tapered neck, with two opposing stylized owl-like faces in relief, wide flared rim. Exterior decorated with an overall black and reddish-orange, interlocking geometric pattern on a cream ground, depicting arms and hands with long claws. Missing approximately 1/2 of the rim, (with two large, unattached, original pieces from the rim included), overall scattered paint losses. Partial rim repaired from five original pieces, the neck and body of the vessel are intact.
Provenance: Ex. Jean-Eugene Lions collection, Geneva, Switzerland, active 1950s-1980.
