Description: Pottery effigy stirrup spout vessel in the form of a standing man dressed in a floor length robe, wearing multiple belts and a fine head cloth with tassels. Face is well modeled with deep age lines. He carries a pack on his back suspended by a tumpline. In one hand he holds a coca-leaf pouch, in the other a lime container. Painted cream and red-brown highlights. Spout repaired and reattached, restored body cracks, restoration to tip of nose and minor spot on left cheek. A rare and fine quality example.
Provenance: Acquired Arte Primitivo, auct 57, lot 334, Ex. Arthur M. Sackler collection, acquired about 1970, accession #N-192. Published: Art of the Andes, Pre-Columbian Sculptured and Painted Ceramics from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, page 177, item #54, full page color illustration, with mention of age verification by virtue of Oxford TL testing, although the TL report is not accompanying lot.
