Matching pair of large silver ear ornaments, each having a large round disc plate and long cylindrical spool on the reverse. Decorated in relief depicting a standing shaman wearing a fancy large headdress, holding a bird head in each hand with long protruding tongues, each with a fish. Outer wave pattern border. Some scattered black surface patina and some remaining traces of the original gilt surface. One has a tiny pin hole and a very minor 1” separation on the edge of the disc plate, the other has a minor small loss on the lower edge seam, otherwise both are intact, overall exc. cond. Nice examples.
The Chimu began to use a great deal more silver than the preceding Moche culture for sumptuous objects such as this pair of ear spools. Copper was readily available in the north coast in rock veins and mine shafts close to the earths surface, but silver is found in deep underground galleries and requires much more labor and risk to mine. Beginning with the Chimu, silver became an important material for jewelry, small sculpture and the production of vessels. |
