Description: |
Painting on a wood panel, possibly the rear panel from a wagon, depicting two battle scenes, with warriors on foot and with horses, and wearing cabasset type helmets, from the Spanish word capacete, meaning “little cap” was a light helmet that could have been worn by Jamestown colonists while aiming a firearm. Similar to the Burgonet helmet cabasset helmets were used in the 16th and 17th centuries by light calvary and infantry soldiers in Europe. Some scattered paint losses, and some edge losses and a loss to the upper left corner edge, a long open age crack across the center of the panel. |
