Description: |
Scrimshaw walrus tusk with a partial skull. One tusk scrimmed with two hunting scenes and a sailor riding on the back of a whale, inscribed; “Pursuit of the Greenland Whale 1856”. This tusk has a repaired break in the upper portion with restoration over the break line. The other tusk is scrimmed with three large whales of various types and inscribed with their scientific names. Tusk is intact. The skull is scrimmed with a beautifully rendered whaling ship, with a U.S. flag and inscribed: “Ship George & Susan... Robert Jones Master” and a coffin inscribed “Mr. Tripp” and, a hard to read inscribed line of text below the coffin. Overall mellow tan surface patina. A beautifully scrimmed example. |
