Description: |
Good old mask representing the head of a lion of the Kore society, one of the broadest plane masks in west african art, of wide squared form with rounded forehead above slightly concave facial plane with open cut eyes encircled with hammered metal sheet detail. Below, the open mouth with openwork teeth on sides is perforated across top for attachment of teeth now lost. Painted with traces of red and black striped pattern. Burnished and worn patina showing signs of use and age. The lion mask is part of the “dyaraw” class of the Kore society, these are relatively rare compared to the Kore society hyena masks. During the ritual ceremony this mask would have would have been seen as a lion on the hunt. See example in Imperato, “Spirits of the Red Savanna: Art and Culture of the Bamana People of Mali”, 2022, no. 38, p. 222. |
