Description: Large buff-brown color pottery head of a dignitary, sonriente type depicted with a trance-like expression, lidded eyes and ceremonially filed front teeth. Wearing a fancy headdress with a central feathered plume and rear lappet. The initials “RM’ scratched on the reverse and an early painted collection number “8822”. Missing the right headdress lappet and right corner of the plume, some scattered minor losses and his necklace reattached, otherwise intact. Custom tiered block base. An impressive example.
Provenance: Ex. Huber Primitive Art, Dixon, IL, 2014. Ex. Allison Cutler, who inherited from her mother, Beverly W. Cutler, who purchased from David Bramhall, 1972.
