Size: 1-3/8” - 2-7/8”L. Frame, 13-1/4” x 13-1/4”.

Description: A group of 22 individually sculpted, buff terracotta heads and partial bodies, from types of figures usually referred to as "Pretty Ladies" which depicted pregnant woman and were planted with the seed corn as a votive offering to the goddess of agriculture. Most bear applique eyes typical of the area, applique details and some bear traces of red pigment. All have some loss. Mounted in a shadow box frame.
Provenance: All ex. Lorenz Borenstein, New Orleans. Collected in the 1950’s. With individual certificates of authenticity for four, including the largest head at center, each bearing a drawing of the fragment, generated by Borenstein in 1963.
