Description: Important and fine blue-green jade clamshell type pendant fashioned from a celt. The front face is concave with a carved and incised design, the reverse is undecorated. The design depicts a composite being in prone position with the upper body in the shape of an intertwined serpent with open jaws framing a human head and the lower body in the form of a human dressed in a thick belt with back flap, fringed kilt and incised leggings. The elongated human head has a rounded cranium, simple brow line, trough-shaped eye, fleshy lips, and a tall rectangular motif incised on his cheek. Directly above his head is a celt-form motif that may represent a vegetation symbol or rain motif. The human head is framed in the gaping jaws of a serpent, with oval eye with iris and a three pronged wing-like design behind it. The legs are depicted slightly bent at the knees and the feet are bare with a slight indent in the soles indicating toes. This piece fits into a small group of Olmec jade clamshell pendants decorated with an anthropomorphic figure in prone position. To date this is possibly the only known pendant with the snake-man motif. Biconical drilled perforation through his nose and tiny perforation on the rear rim. Upper rim with two biconical suspension holes. Intact, exc. cond. Custom base. A highly important and beautiful example.
Provenance: Private California collection. Ex. Robert Morris Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM. Ex. Miami collection, 1960s-1970s. A 3 page letter of authenticity from Peter David Joralemon is included with this piece, dated August 3, 2006.
