Description: |
Pair of molded pottery female court musicians, one holding pan pipes and the other an erhu (Chinese violin), a two-stringed bowed musical instrument, more specifically a spike fiddle, which may also be called a “southern fiddle.” The two-stringed Chinese fiddle dates from Tang dynasty. Both depicted with tall hair buns, and wearing floor length, vertical pleated dresses. Multicolor painted highlights and details. Overall scattered areas of surface deposits. Head of one figure reattached, and both are repaired from a few large original pieces with restoration over the break lines. |
