Description: |
Decorated atlatl, spear thrower with two small carved marine ivory whales and nineteen small carved seal appliques, all attached individually with tiny carved ivory pegs on to the wooden atlatl. Trimmed on three edges with a fitted ivory border, attached with several ivory pegs. Ivory insert at end strengthen holes inserted to allow pegs to be placed that anchor the dart or harpoon prior to release. Fitted with a carved walrus bone handle tip having a carved attachment hole. The outer ivory edging has seven age splits, otherwise intact. A rare and beautiful example. This design is typical of atlatls used by the Greenlandic Eskimo. |
