Description: |
Fantastic elongated spirit mask carved with multiple faces, one with large concave eyes, another below with conical projecting eyes, one lost, also a finial head of a wild pig with cowry shells emerges from the chin, and another small anthropomorphic face is modeled on opposing direction below applied hair. A central ridge of open rings with fiber knots may have held other ephemeral attachments. Layered patina with traces of pigment, and compacted clay and human hair on top. Surface wear, light losses.
The mask would have been mounted on a conical fiber structure as part of a pair of masks representing mythical male of female pairs, and worn on the shoulders of a dancer. |
