Description: Large tan-buff pottery figure of Xipe Totec, the fierce god, depicted as a standing priest clad in the flayed skin of a sacrificial victim. The eye slits with black bitumen painted detail, the stretched, hollow mouth, dangling phallus and thick cuffs on both sleeves and trousers are indications of the overskin. Also wears crossed bandoliers across his chest, large, looped ear ornaments and once held a rattle in his raised right hand, now gone. Head, arms, legs reattached. Left ear missing, repaired breaks on left side of face, legs, arms and back. Reassembled from forty or more original pieces, probably more than 30 years ago and a new, professional restoration would make this a quite excellent example.
Provenance: Private NYC. collection. Ex. Arte Primitivo auction 74, lot 124, 2015. Ex. The Allan Stone Collection, acquired from Bolivar Andrade, NYC., 1987.
