Description: Natural buff color pottery large brazier cover featuring a priest’s head within massive architectural framework, the idealized face with striped cheeks and once adorned with a butterfly nose ornament, now missing. Wearing spool type ear ornaments, and a four strand beaded necklace, holding a staff in both hands. Surmounted by a horizontal frieze decorated with adornments, including rosette medallions of the “scrolled reptile eye” glyphs with some traces of mica inlays, feathery plumes, and surmounted by features of the mythical butterfly deity, with arching antennae and feathered eyes, an incised and infringed plaque encircling the back, with some remaining traces of red, black and white pigment. Repaired from approximately thirty original pieces with restoration over the break lines, and a few normal losses. An impressive example. * This item is fragile and requires extra care in shipping. Crating is recommended but not mandatory, and will cost an extra $400.
