Description: Fine carved speckled black and cream hardstone mask, depicting a shaman in transformation, having high relief carved, very expressive facial features, with a bow shape upper lip, deeply drilled at both corners. Recessed carved ovoid eyes with drilled pupils. Well carved naturalistic wide nose with large flared nostrils and tab type ears. A large carved circular depression on the reverse. Two small biconical drilled attachment holes at the temples. Ancient loss to his left ear tab, left attachment hole with a small loss, and a 1-7/8” original piece reattached in the chin, otherwise intact. A beautifully carved example.
Provenance: Private Southwest collection. Ex. Federico Bermudez collection, acquired over 50 years ago. Copy of provenance letter available.
