Description: |
Exceptional and finely detailed, large pottery bullae depicting King Adhur Narseh (309 A.D.), in profile and having an inscription in the border around his head. Excellent ancient surface patina with encrustation on the reverse. Adhur Narseh was the son of Hormizd II and the ninth king of the Sassanian Empire. Following his father's death, the nobles and Zoroastrian clergy saw an opportunity to gain influence within the Sassanian Empire. Thus, they murdered Adhur Narseh, blinded one of his brothers and forced another brother to flee. Another source states that he ruled several months before being killed because he was a tyrant. He was succeeded by his unborn brother Shapur II. |
