Description: |
Solid gold finger ring has softly pointed shoulders and flat inscribed bezel. The central signs are combined in a monogram...reading from top to bottom and right to left, they may be construed as two names: (1) m d+h+r t (2) W t r, meaning Ammi-Dhakharat Watar. The second name “Watar” is a common surname for Sabaeab rulers, suggesting that the ring belonged to a member of the royal family, or to a very important leader, at court or as a local chief. The style of the signs indicates a date of about 4th-5th century A.D. under the Himyarite Empire, which ruled over the territories of all four older kingdoms of Saba, Ma in, Qataban and Hadramaut, and beyond. |
