Description: |
Oval, light red-orange carnelian intaglio is incised with a design of a krater with bulging body, stemmed foot, tall neck, and delicate handles sit on a ground line between seated female sphinxes, their wings raised. Emerging from the mouth of the vase are two palm branches, and above it is a crescent moon. Four letters appear in the field around: C l h n, probably the name Alhan. The intaglio is set in an elaborate gold holder embellished with swirling designs that is vertically pierced, reminiscent of a ring. The small aperture, however, suggests the object was suspended rather than worn on a finger. Some minor edge roughness on the intaglio and a small edge chip, otherwise overall exc. cond. A very beautiful and exceptional example. |
