Description: |
Fine and early pre-classic standing female figure, depicted with wide hips, holding both hands to her waist. Muscular legs bound by constricting knee ligatures, pointy erect breasts, wide narrow eyes and wearing a fancy headdress decorated on both the front and back with sets of abstract images. Overall scattered root marks and surface deposits. Intact, exc. cond. A rare, high quality example. Red-slipped female figures from the rare category classified as Type DK. Hollow figures of this type belongs to the "Displayed Deity complex" (Bradley and Joralemon, The Lords of Life, Notre Dame, 1993), whereby a set of abstract images are incised and/or painted on the heads and torsos, serving as emblems of fertility and power of a supernatural. Images include a splayed quadruped, corn symbols and attributes of female genitalia in schematized and stylized form. |
