Description: Olmec buff color pottery with traces of red slip, standing figure with a bundle behind the back and traces of red pigment on the hair, lips and feet. This matronly female figure almost appears to be mincing toward someone with a surprise behind her back. The head was shaved save for a shock of red painted, striated hair on the top of the head and mass of more red painted plaits in the back. This figure also belongs to the eyeless style, in which the orbits are blank, a common motif on many Las Bocas figurines. The proportions are naturalistically observed, if somewhat exaggerated, and the finely modeled face is individually and delightfully characterized. Such Las Bocas figurines are more lifelike and expressive than comparable examples from Tlatilco. Head reattached with restoration over the break line, and a tiny chip on the front tip of his right foot, otherwise intact, overall exc. cond. Custom bronze base.
Provenance: Private NYC. collection, acquired by the current collection in 2003, from Rebecca Stokes, NY. Ex. John A. Stokes, Nyack, N.Y., acquired in 1974 from Alfonso Sosa.
