Description: Buff color pottery with red pigment. A standing female figure with long strands of hair on her shoulder, which she seems to have pulled from the back of her head while raising her other arm and head to look at something above her. It's a casual and expressive gesture that suggests daily life activities. This figure also belongs to the eyeless style, in which the orbits are blank, a common motif on many Las Bocas figurines, as well as some monuments from Veracruz. The proportions are naturalistically observed, if somewhat exaggerated, and the finely modeled face is individually and delightfully characterized. Such Las Bocas figurines are more lifelike and vivacious than comparable examples from Tlatilco. Both arms reattached and a repaired break through her waist, with restoration over the break lines. Custom bronze base. An exceptional example.
Provenance: Private NYC. collection, acquired by the current collection in 2003 from John A. Stokes, Nyack, N.Y., acquired in 1974 from E. Sosa.
