| Description: |
Buff color pottery standing figure, with traces of red pigment. Judging by her silhouette, this female is an aging matron. Her short-waisted figure has ample hips, a full abdomen and fleshy thighs accentuated by incised lines that separate them from the stomach and define the groin area. The lower legs taper to small feet. Her face is stern. Her head was modeled without hair but the forehead is decorated with two imported red Spondylus shells, which are shown on figurines from the Olmec heartland at San Lorenzo in Veracruz. The back of the head is also hollowed out in a horizontal bar with three vertical spikes that may be a stylized cloud. The placement of this motif may be symbolic and perhaps identifies the woman as a member of a particular family or clan. Traces of red pigment appear in various places. Head reattached with restoration over the break line. Minor ancient chips to the tips of feet. Upper portion of head cleanly reattached. Custom bronze base. A rare and beautiful example. |
