Description: |
Pottery bichrome vessel with reddish-orange and cream with geometric patterns.
The vessel was modeled in the highly stylized form of a feline figure with a growling open mouth, projecting fangs and curling massive tail. Spouts, handle and upper curled tip of the tail are restored, body repaired from approximately six original pieces with restoration over the break lines. This type of vessel with two spouts and a bridge handle is known as an alcarraza. It developed in the early Ilama phase and became the hallmark vessel of Calima in the subsequent Yotoco phase. The alcarraza was a kind of standard vehicle for modeling diverse human and animal forms from daily life, as well as house models. |
