Description: |
Fine and large compacted limestone double-sided example, depicting two different anthropomorphic standing figures, having semiabstract, deeply carved features. The front side depicts a figure with large eyes and linear arms and legs, possibly depicting a male. The reverse side most likely depicts a female with a large carved pubic region and large eyes. Overall scattered surface deposits. A minor ancient surface loss on the forehead, above the “male’s” left eye, otherwise intact, exc. cond. Double sided examples are quite rare, and additionally this is a larger example. Custom metal base. The Valdivia culture is one of the earliest cultures in the New World to settle in permanent villages and to raise crops, starting as early as 3500 BCE. This transformation between hunting and gathering groups living on what nature provides and the ability to use agriculture to produce food is called the Neolithic Revolution and represents one of the greatest changes ever seen in human lifestyles. |
