Description: |
A large mythical figure is painted in beige on the woven cotton ground. Serrated serpent
appendages spread out from the head and body, interspersed with small human figures and animals. Elite members of Paracas society were bundled for burial with a plethora of woven garments and feathers inserted in between cloth layers. Often, the final textile was a painted cloth, or so-called mummy mask placed over the facial area. Early examples have merely a face, while later cloths depict a complete human figure, as on this textile. Most published examples are from the Ica Valley. Complete and in exc. cond. A beautiful example. |
