Description: Very large and complete man’s, multicolor woven textile mantle composed of approximately seventy-seven small “window” type panels, having a deep blue ground and a finely woven interlocking, repeating, semiabstract pelicans in diagonal rows, in culturally royal colors of purple, gold and red. Each “window” panel is bordered with an integral woven multicolor box frame, depicting interlocking abstract fish. Several scattered small holes, and some minor edge tatters. Sewn to a modern cloth backing. Certainly a master weaving and very rare technical design. The pelican was a sacred creature to the people of the Peruvian coast who lived and fished in close association with these enigmatic birds. Their ability to catch fish while gliding gracefully over the waves elevated its nature to god like dimensions and it was venerated for thousands of years.
