Description: |
Tall anthropomorphic female figure of idealized and abstract forms, modeled with sagittal crest, large c-shaped ears, squared shoulders, conical breasts, and rounded backside. The front, arms and back of her torso covered with deep scarification lines, and engraved lines along hairdo. Surface wear, small repaired areas on left hip. Medium brown patina. Metal base.
Jonyeleni figures represent young girls in their idealized form, exemplifying the peak of physical beauty according to Bamana cultural standards. These figures are prominently featured during the septennial initiation ceremonies conducted by the Jo society. During these events, the figures are carried from village to village by new initiates. They underscore their important social function, reinforcing cultural ideals and expectations within the community. See similar figures in Bamana: The Art of Existence in Mali, 2001, pp. 146-148. |
