Description: |
Carved white marble head of a Lohan, originally from a figure, depicted with a slight smile, partially closed lidded eyes, elongated eyes. Scattered surface deposits. Some ancient loss to the edge of his right ear, and a chip on the tip of his nose. Mounted on a custom bronze base. In traditional Buddhist belief, the lohan is a disciple who has attained enlightenment through intense personal effort. Beginning in the ninth century, the worship of lohan and their depiction in art evolved primarily in the context of the Chan (Zen), or “meditation,” sect of Buddhism. |
