Description: |
Dense hardwood carving of a transformation lizard man figure, of curved form, with elongated anthropomorphic face, articulated phallus, and tapered pommel handle or tail. Minor hairline age crack on back, weathered surface. Medium brown burnished patina in areas, mellow worn patina. Inscribed with “IC.30558, Oster-Ins., Dr. Krämen” on underside in black ink.
Some “moko” were placed in the doorways of houses, eitiher suspended from the roof or set into the ground, to protect dwellings and inhabitants from harm. They were also used as clubs to defend entrances.
