Description: |
Rotorua school carved walking stick or cane, partially cut down, with figure of a male ancestor with inlaid shell eyes, engraved with facial and body tattoos, and depicted wearing a feathered textile around the waist with one hand at waist that may have been wielding an item of status, now gone. Further adorned with three bands of white shell and iridescent abalone above and below the figure. Some shell and abalone inlays lost. Deep brown mellow handled patina. Finely and intricately carved. Quite lovely. |
