Description: |
Steel helmet, in the manner of the Scold’s Bridle, sometimes called a witch's bridle, a gossip's bridle, a brank's bridle, or simply branks, was an instrument of punishment, and a form of public humiliation. First recorded in Scotland in 1567, the branks were also used in England and its colonies. The kirk-sessions and barony courts in Scotland inflicted the contraption mostly on female transgressors and women considered to be rude, nags, common scolds, or drunken. This mask is of multipiece construction, held together by rivets and hinges. Depicted with large coiled horns, openwork eyes and toothy mouth. Overall blackened surface patina. Intact, overall exc. cond. |
