Size: 8-1/2”W.

Description: Fine decorated pottery red-figured fish plate, of a classic pinax or pinakion (meaning tablet for its shape) form, standing on an integral pedestal foot. Beautifully decorated with three different fish, a lobster and a flounder, and a small shell, all of which are beautifully detailed and painted via the red-figure technique with added fugitive white and yellow details. The sea creatures swimming around a central garum (fish sauce) recess with rays and a surrounding wave pattern, the perimeter of the downturned rim adorned with a band of laurel leaves. A minor small ancient chip on the edge of the foot rim, and a 3-1/2” section of the outer rim edge is professionally restored. A beautiful, high quality example.
