| Description: |
An extraordinary fossilized upper skull from a massive prehistoric sabertooth feline known as Amphimachairodus giganteus! Excellent preservation in the natural red clay matrix with the sabers on display, the serrations on these teeth are unique to this species and are well preserved. Amphimachairodus was lion sized - using strong back legs to jump and quick bursts of speed to stalk and sever neck arteries of their prey with these saber canines. Skeletal reconstructions suggest that these cats were one of the largest ever known felids, easily an apex predator of its time. The rarity of these big cat skulls cannot be stressed enough- the value of such specimens is astronomical from a collector and scientific standpoint.
Very good condition. Professionally prepared and restored. Infill to gaps and fissures. Repairs to saber teeth. Stable fissures and striations throughout from fossilization process.
