| Description: |
Beautifully carved vessel of graceful ovoid form with a rounded base, surmounted by a lid depicting three water birds descending in procession into the water. The bowl's shoulder is encircled by a band of raised nodes reminiscent of scarification motifs. Exc. cond., rich, deep dark brown patina, burnished from handling, warm honey-brown sheen across the backs of the birds provides a subtle tonal contrast that enhances the carving.
Among the Lozi, finely carved lidded bowls served as prestigious containers for storing and presenting food. Beyond their practical function, they were important symbols of rank and authority, commissioned for use within the royal court and carved by highly skilled artisans from subject communities. Quality of workmanship and elegant iconography reflected the wealth, status, and cultural sophistication of their owners. |
