Description: A highly important and extremely fine example of an M12 type figure has been sculpted from a slightly grayish-green hard stone, possibly andesite which has weathered and oxidized to a beige tone from long burial. The surface shows traces of a red pigment and this is indicative of ritual interment. Precise, linear cuts made denoting the various body and facial parts. This figure is quite expressive and animated looking. The large, majestic head is the focal point and is shown turned slightly to the viewers’ left. Well-defined eyebrows and ears are classic hallmark traits of the M12 type. The mouth appears to be open and the top of the head is finished and flat. The contoured torso shows two diagonal cuts on the lower half denoting the tightly pressed arms, and the figure’s hands are large and in relief just below, held at waist level. Both legs have been cleanly reattached, with break line left visible. Excellent archaeological surface remains with ample soil, dendritic, iron oxide and other mineral deposits. Custom fitted lucite block base. A top quality, classic example.
Provenance: Private FL. collection. Ex. Michael Cichon Tribal Arts, FL., ex. Hansen collection, Osprey, FL., ex. Bart Family collection, NYC. & FL., originally collected by Stuart Bart in 1960’s, NYC. CIRAM Lab report.
