Description: Squat round shape stonepaste ceramic vase, painted in black under turquoise glaze, belonging to a group of ceramics known as Kubachi ware. Named for a village in the Caucasus where this pottery was discovered, such wares may have been produced elsewhere in northwestern Iran. This bowl, painted in black under a turquoise glaze, with an incised and glazed pattern of spirals, spoked and geometric elements. Professionally repaired from approximately ten original pieces with restoration over the break lines. A beautiful example.
Provenance: NYC. collection, ex. Fortuna Fine Arts, NYC. With tag marked: “H. Kevorkian Collection” and “Persian Exhibition, New York, 1940” The Persian Exhibition was created by an organization called “The Iranian Institute” and formed part of the 1939-1940 World’s Fair. There is a book called “Gods of Our Forefathers” by Phyllis Ackerman that discusses this exhibit.
