Description: |
Bearded male of flattened form with huge, curly beard, ovular mouth, large nose and crescentic eye slots. Has dangling copper bell earrings of Mixtec style, is lined on the interior with a cloth backing and has an applied, relief skull on each cheek. Has a folded upper corner and an old tag labeled ”Moro, La Parota”. Nice.
“Barbones” were carved for the tourist industry, and although they were never danced they are collected as folk art from Guerrero. See “Behind the Mask in Mexico” by Janet Brody Esser, 1988. |
