Basalt pounder carved with rounded handle with central groove. This type of pounder is most frequently found in the Marquesas Islands, and would be used for mashing "poipoi". Gray weathered patina with areas of smoother worn patina on handle. See Kaeppler, A., “Polynesia: The Mark and Carolyn Blackburn Collection of Polynesian Art” 2010, no. 303 for similar example. |
