Description: Camelid wool textile bowl form cover. Although many woven four-cornered hats have survived from Tiahuanaco, this is a unique example of a woven bowl cover. The design consists of a small frieze of a repeating animal with upturned tail, similar to the procession of winged animals on the Gateway of the Sun at Tiahuanaco. In between the animals on the bowl are geometric motifs that resemble mirror frames in an upside down position. The color scheme is a bold mixture of bright red, green, and yellow with small areas of light blue. The rim area also has a series of small rectangular elements in the same colors. Two tiny, very minor sewn repairs near the base, otherwise intact, overall exc. cond. An exceptional example. Custom bowl form base.
Provenance: Private NYC. collection, acquired by the current collection prior to 1997 from Steve Berger, Arte Textil, San Francisco, CA. Ex. Jerry Neri, acquired from Howard Greenberg after January 2005. Harry Greenberg, Palo Alto, CA., acquired before October 2004. Bibliography: Young-Sanchez, Margaret, Tiwanaku: Ancestors of the Inca. Denver Art Museum and University of Nebraska Press, Denver, 2004, pg. 141, fig. 5.20. Exhibitions: Tiwanaku: Ancestors of the Inca: Denver Art Museum, October 16, 2004 - January 23, 2005.
